Post: In The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, the fictional characters in a boardroom go around the table saying that certain responsibilities didn't lie in their department and that it wasn't their job. Due to division of labor, they felt sales should be up to the sales team, and advertising should be up to the marketing team, and innovation should be up to research and development. Needless to say, this was one of the dysfunctions. This reminds me of a time my Grandmaster in Tae Kwon-Do gave my students a simple lesson: "When you see something on the floor, pick it up and put it away or throw it away. To not do this is rude to the next person and assumes they will do it." Whether in a corporate skyscraper, a Martial Arts or Childcare, or in one's home, a culture of personal responsibility should be cultivated. Teaching children to say "that's my job," helps them see their appropriate role in the family and society.
