Post: There's a great line from the classic song "Desperado" by the Eagles: "And freedom, oh freedom, well that's just some people talkin'." The main character in the song is making the mistake of thinking that being alone and free will bring him the happiness he's seeking. Similarly, children think that having more autonomy will do the same for them. I'm all for giving children the freedom that they have earned, however some children should be watched very closely as they lack good sense or they're untrustworthy. Preparing them for adulthood should mean that privileges should be paired with responsibilities. When they've proven that they can handle adult things, they can be given additional leeway. Many parents do this in reverse, hoping to win their child's affection. This only serves to teach them that they're special without reason- a poor lesson indeed.
